Rum, Wool & Rebellion — The Nepean Saturday
Penrith's producers market, the Cox family's Fernhill at Mulgoa, and the road to the Cowpastures — the wool story the legend forgot, one second Saturday a month.
The Nepean chapter runs on the second Saturday of the month, when the producers set up at Penrith Showground. Stock the basket, then take the pretty road south into the Mulgoa Valley, where Fernhill — built by a son of William Cox of merino fame — presides over old stud country. Here's the story the plaques don't tell: Macarthur is toasted as the father of the merino, but he was twice refused when he tried to buy the famous Cape flock Waterhouse brought out — it was the Cox family who bought the bulk of it, and that flock's sheep-cousins became the spine of France's finest merino wool. Finish down the old road toward Camden and the Cowpastures, where the legend lives — and now you know the ledger. Rum, wool and rebellion: the sequel.
1
Penrith Producers Market
Suggested: 8:00 – 10:00 AM · runs to 1 PM
2nd Saturday of each month, 8:00 AM – 1:00 PM
Penrith Paceway, Station Street, Penrith NSW
Crawler's tip: Second-Saturday producers at the Showground — load the esky with the good stuff before the day turns historical. The coffee carts know their business.
🚗 ≈ 20 min south down Mulgoa Road
2
Fernhill & the Mulgoa Valley — the wool truth
Suggested: 10:30 AM – 12:30 PM
Fernhill Estate, 1041 Mulgoa Road, Mulgoa NSW 2745
Crawler's tip: The sandstone homestead a Cox son built over old stud and grazing country — the family that, unlike the legend's hero, actually bought Waterhouse's Cape flock when Macarthur was twice turned away. The estate is public parkland these days; check current open hours before you go, and take the valley slowly either way — Mulgoa Road through here is one of Sydney's last great rural drives.
🚗 ≈ 25 min via The Northern Road
3
The Cowpastures road — toward Camden
Suggested: 1:00 PM – whenever
Camden town centre, Argyle Street, Camden NSW 2570
Crawler's tip: Roll on south to where the wild cattle strayed and the Macarthur legend was planted. Camden's main street does a proper country-town Saturday lunch — take it slowly, raise a glass to the flock that got away from the father of the merino, and drive home full. That's the sequel.
